LOOPGEAR designs and manufactures LED flashlights and everyday-carry lighting gear for outdoor users, hobbyist collectors and professionals who actually depend on portable light. The brand works on a design-use-redesign loop and is openly against disposable hardware, which is a claim worth testing rather than repeating. We spent five weeks with the SK05, the model most people land on first.
LOOPGEAR SK05 EDC Flashlight
The SK05 is a genuinely well-engineered pocket light that sits above the throwaway tier without reaching for enthusiast pricing. Sustained output drops off faster than the headline number suggests, but the beam quality, the interface and the machining are all better than the price implies.
How it scored
What we liked
- Machining and anodising are a clear step above budget-tier pocket lights
- Beam has a usable hotspot with genuinely wide spill, not a tunnel
- Interface is simple enough to operate with gloves on in the dark
- Clip and knurling make it secure in a pocket without snagging
What we didn’t
- Turbo mode steps down noticeably within the first couple of minutes
- No onboard USB-C charging on this model, so you manage cells yourself
- Low mode could go lower for genuine night-adapted use
Build and machining
Pick the SK05 up and the price stops being a question. Threads are cut cleanly and run smooth with no grit, the anodising is even across the body, and the knurling is aggressive enough to hold with wet hands without turning into a cheese grater in your pocket. This is the part of the product where LOOPGEAR is clearly spending money.
Beam and output
The beam is the other highlight. There is a defined hotspot for reaching down a driveway or into a treeline, but the spill is wide enough that you are not constantly sweeping the light to see your feet. Colour rendering is pleasant rather than clinical. The caveat is sustained output: turbo is genuinely bright, but it steps down within the first couple of minutes as the head heats up. That is physics in a light this size, not a defect, but if you buy on headline lumens you will feel misled.
Interface and daily use
The interface is refreshingly boring, which is a compliment. You can cycle modes in the dark, with gloves, without memorising a manual. Low is useful for tent and vehicle work, though we wanted a lower moonlight mode for genuine night-adapted use. The pocket clip has held position through five weeks of daily clipping and unclipping.
The LOOPDOT, briefly
We also carried the LOOPDOT keychain light alongside it. It is not a replacement for the SK05, but as the light that is always physically on you it has quietly become the one we reach for most often. If you order the SK05, adding it costs very little.
